We brush the entire run with a rotary head sized to the duct and measure airflow at the exterior outlet before and after. The measurement is the point: it turns "seems better" into a number you can compare against next year. If the duct is crushed, disconnected inside a wall, or run in flexible foil where code wants rigid metal, we tell you rather than cleaning it and calling it done.

Here is the failure specific to this climate, and it is worth understanding because it is why a vent that was fine two winters ago is suddenly a problem.
The exterior hood has a flap that should open under airflow and drop shut when the dryer stops. Lint gradually mats it partway open. In a mild climate that is merely inefficient. Here, a flap held open in January lets sub-zero air move back up the duct between loads. The residual humidity in the run condenses against that cold air and then freezes. Now you have ice binding the lint, which holds the flap open wider, which admits more cold air. It compounds through the winter and it is why we frequently find a hood completely sealed shut with a plug of frozen lint by February.
The other local pattern is termination height. A lot of Flathead housing - cabins around Columbia Falls especially - vents through the roof or a soffit because that was the shortest route out. Those terminations are out of sight permanently, they collect snow around the hood, and they are where nesting shows up in spring. We finish at the outside, with the hood off, for exactly that reason.
Once a year for a normal household, closer to every nine months if you run several loads a day. If a normal load now takes two cycles, it is already overdue regardless of the calendar.
It is a recognised residential ignition source, which is why the mechanical code requires rigid metal duct vented independently outside. Most of the time the practical effect is a slow dryer and a high power bill. Occasionally it is worse.
Sometimes, and sometimes not safely. If the roof is snow-loaded we will tell you honestly whether it waits for a thaw or whether we can do the run from inside and return for the hood.
We pull it out, clear the transition hose and get the lint from behind and under it. Opening the cabinet to clean the internal blower is appliance repair - we will tell you if we think it is warranted.
